Finding websites

I got in a brief discussion the other day about how one finds the websites reviewed in one's pages/blog.

I tend to go in spurts. I do go through other stumbler's archives, sometimes fairly thoroughly. Lots of times I do find rather hidden treasures that have fallen from popularity for various reasons. Sometimes the site has been miscategorized which doesn't help its popularity.

I am one of the miscatters here - which means that if you request a site's topic be changed, I may be the person who changes the topic. It has been a good way to see some new and different sites, although many of the sites are really not to my taste, not that they are bad, just not topics in which I have particular interest.

I also find sites, like a lot of other people, I assume, when I'm actually looking for something for me. For instance, if I'm looking for a recipe for something and I find a great food/cooking site. Or something I've read about in a book, newspaper or the Internet interests me enough that I do a search to find more, I find sites that are good enough to add to StumbleUpon sometimes.

I use the StumbleUpon button in spurts . . . I tend to go through a lot of sites in a relatively short amount of time. If the site look s interesting, I'll stop and look, maybe write a review, maybe give it a thumb. There are a very few that I can tell quickly just don't interest me at all . . . those I tend to thumb down so that I am at least less likely to see them again in the future. Most of the sites that I come across that way I just look at briefly and stumble on . . . sorta like power channel surfing.

Two of my favorite ways to find sites is through blogs (not StumbleUpon) that I like and sites that I like that have lots of links. I'm also on RSS feed for LOTS of different sites so that I can at least glance at what new offerings are available at other sites.

I'm guessing that this is generally how people find sites to review . . ., but I'm curious how other people do find the sites they review. So, how do YOU find the sites that you review and how do you use the StumbleUpon button?
